Yes, indeed. It’s a simple principle you articulate and one that on paper is accepted by evangelicals — that a text cannot mean what it couldn’t have meant in its original context, and that all Scripture must be read in it’s original grammatical, historical, linguistic, and cultural context. The refusal to abide by this principle belies/reveals the underlying, unacknowledged, and unrepented hostility that has evangelical Christianity by the throat.
