Progressive evangelicals, at least every one I’ve spoken with in your Category 2 (many are Category 1 — unwilling to “disrupt the unity of their fill-in-the-blank, a unity contingent on scapegoating LGBTQ people) ground their non-affirming stand in Scripture. And that means they concur that texts like Romans 1 inform a “biblical view of homosexuality.” And that means they take the position that same-gender sex (and attracation if Romans 1 is the guide) is “intrinsically disordered” — and why wouldn’t that view be deeply harmul to LGBTQ people who internalize it? And why wouldn’t people who are otherwise “progressive” on other issues, have MORE of an impact, more power to foist internalize homophobia on LGBTQ people? I’ve never once talked to a so-called progressive evangelical who could face this. Or acknowledge that perhaps their privilege as accepted within the camp evangelicals was blinding them. Father forgive them, they don’t know what they are doing. But those who are responsible for running conferences that specifically draw LGBTQ people already struggling with internalized homophobia, do know better.
