Nathan, Just to be clear — I’m convinced that what Paul is railing against in Romans 1 is NOT modern-day gay couples, per se, but to grossly exploitatitve practices of his era (pedersasty, sexual abuse of slaves, orgies, etc.) The text cannot be applied to those it does not describe. Beyond that, yes we are called to a discipleship to Jesus that affects and re-orders our desires. WE tend to imitate the desires of others naturally and we are brought into the non-rivalrous love of the Trinity where there is a positive imitative desire. We imitate the desire of Jesus as we interact with him — at it is this re-ordering of desire that leads to becoming an ally to LGBTQ+ people today. Churches should also be up front about other issues they regard as non-negotiable (remarriage after divorce, for example) where people do experience a bait & switch, though I think it’s more an issue on LGBTQ today.
