John K Adams, I wrote the piece for an audience that would include people unsure about their connection with God and unsure whether God exists … so it’s helpful from that posture to wonder, “If there were a God? etc.” In other words I wasn’t

presuming to be writing only for those who have assurance let alone certainty of God’s existence.
