James Finn I don’t know how I missed this one but I’ve saved it (second save of the day, hit a goldmine, and I’ve not saved 20 stories yet). The part that got me was the knowing, slightly subversive and approving look that your dad gave you when you and the girl sneaked away for hot chocolate. A look you deserved and needed for a sneaking away for hot chocolate with a boy … and into that space instead, the homophobic/hostile screed of the preacher that sent you trotting to the bathroom. This is such a powerfully affecting and humanizing and revealing piece of writing. James Finn at his best.
